LANDSCAPESOFTHEBALKANFRONTBain’slandscapepaintingsshowthetoughterrainoftheBalkanFront.Themarshes,mountainsandravinesforcedtheopposingarmiestoastalemateinearly1917.TheBulgarianarmyhadcreatedstrongmilitarypositionsinthemountainsalongtheBulgarian,SerbianandMacedonian(Greek)borderaftercapturingSerbiain1915.TheirnextaimwastotakeMacedonia,whichhadalargeBulgarianpopulation.TheBritish,French,Italian,RussianandSerbianarmiesbuilttrenchesandcampsinthegulliesandravinesofthefoothillstoopposethem.Thecoldmountainwintersmadefrostbitecommon.Incontrast,inthehotsummersthemountaincampsbecamesemidesert.Troopswhohadmovedawayfromthefrontlinetothebattalionreserveonthemarshyplainscaughtmalaria.PerhapsitwasbecauseofthishardshipthatBainpaintedfewmilitaryscenes,preferringthelandscapeitselfandthechangingskies.

THEBALKANSINMICROCOSMBainwasfascinatedbythepeoplehemetintheBalkans.Hisincrediblydetailedportraitsshowawayoflifebasedonsubsistencefarming.AlthougheverythinglookspeacefulinBain’sportraitsthiswasfarfromthecase.Themixtureofethnicgroupsthatherecordedinthetitlesofhisportraitshadplayedaroleinthe1912and1913Balkanwars,aswellasWorldWarOne.Atthebeginningofthe1900sOrthodoxSlavs,CatholicandIslamicAlbanians,Turks,Jews,Roma,VlachsandothersalllivedinMacedonia,partoftheOttomanempire.AstheOttomanEmpirebrokeup,thisethnicmixallowedsurroundingnationalistgovernmentstomakeclaimstoMacedonia.Tensofthousandsofpeoplebecamerefugeesinthewarsthatfollowed.Wedonotknowwhetherthe“ArabTurks”,“LaughingTurk”,“MacedonianGirl”andotherspicturedbyBainweredisplacedornot.

WHENTHEWARISO’ERANDPTEBAINRETURNS…Bain’sWorldWarOneservicehadalongimpactonhisartisticworkoncehereturnedtoScotlandinearly1919.HisBalkandrawingsandpaintingswerecentraltothewayhepromotedhisartisticwork.Untilthelate1920smostoftheworkBainshoweddrewonhisBalkanwarservice.HeexhibitedBalkanworkattheParisSalonin1922and1925andattheRoyalScottishAcademyin1927and1929.BainalsosoughttosellhisBalkanwork-apricelistincludes79Balkandrawingsandwatercolourpaintings.GroamHouseMuseumholdsanumberofhisBalkandrypointimpressionswithpricesmarkedonthem.GeorgeBainoftentookoneimageandcreatedversionsindifferentmedia.Thisallowedhimtoexperimentbutitmayalsohavemeantthathehadmoreworktosell,tosupplementhisartteacher’ssalary.AlthoughBainbecamefamousforhismethodofteachingCelticart,hisdrypointsstillsellatauctiontoday.
